How can a Beginner Portuguese student start interacting in Portugal? Many students complain that they want to speak Portuguese in Portugal but they find it an Impossible Mission. As words don’t come out as fast as they wish, so, in the first obstacle they tend to give up and immediately change their chip to English. Most of my students are learning Portuguese for one of three reasons: because they are in the Golden Visa program; because they want to move and live in Portugal; or due to having Portuguese family members and they want to be able to communicate. Everyone visits Portugal, at least once a year, and they get frustrated because they travel to our country with lots of hope that they will practice the language with locals but there’s a simple aspect that, unfortunately, doesn’t usually work in their favour… When the trip begins in the taxi and my students attempt to slowly speak Portuguese, the taxi driver very kindly swops the speech to English. It is not on purpose; it is just a very typical Portuguese characteristic: we want tourists to feel comfortable in our country and we like to warm them with our hospitality! But together with the people’s sympathy, there goes the attempt to speak Portuguese …. The Portuguese are very fond of helping others and that is why they always try to speak in English to make life easier for tourists. So, I tell my students the secret is persistence. Be persistent and continue the dialogue in Portuguese at your own pace and the other person will eventually understand that what you really want to speak in Portuguese. When this point is successfully reached, you will have all the help and the hospitality that you already had available in English, but now in Portuguese- the Portuguese hospitality will, finally, start to work in your favour. Be persistent ! Como é que os alunos iniciantes de português começam a comunicar em Portugal? Muitos alunos queixam-se de que querem falar português em Portugal, mas isso é completamente impossível. Quando começam a falar e as palavras não saem à velocidade que eles querem, à primeira contrariedade ou ajuda em inglês, desistem logo e mudam o “chip” para o inglês. A maioria dos meus alunos está a aprender português por uma das três razões, por estarem no programa Golden Visa, por quererem mudar-se e viver em Portugal ou porque têm familiares portugueses e querem comunicar com eles. Todos visitam Portugal, pelo menos uma vez por ano, e ficam frustrados porque vêm com muita esperança de que vão praticar muito a língua portuguesa com os locais, mas geralmente não é isso o que acontece. Mal começa a viagem no táxi após a primeira tentativa de conversa, que geralmente é mais lenta, o taxista muito gentilmente, muda o discurso imediatamente para o inglês. O taxista não faz isto de propósito, mas sim porque é uma característica muito típica portuguesa – somos muito hospitaleiros e gostamos de agradar os turistas. E lá se vai a tentativa de falar português …. Os Portugueses gostam muito de ajudar e por isso tentam sempre falar em inglês para facilitar a vida aos turistas. Por isso eu digo aos meus alunos que o segredo é a persistência. Sejam persistentes e continuem o diálogo em português no vosso ritmo e o outro interlocutor acabará por compreender que o que se quer mesmo é falar em português. E quando se atinge este ponto, aí vão ter toda a ajuda e o espírito hospitaleiro português já vai começar a funcionar a vosso favor. Sejam persistentes!
